So I had a whiny post up here that I regretted. There is absolutely a healthy space for complaining and bitching in one's life, and DW is pretty much the place where I put that, but I think that post in specific was very non-productive and not useful and so I pulled it down.
Instead, have me rambling on about my Thor/Loki AU idea.
...but writing what you know sometimes leads to putting your personal life into your stories in odd ways.
I wanted to put Thor and Loki into some kind of less-magical, more everyday AU, where I could just bounce their personalities off of each other and play with the pseduo-incest kink a bit. In the end I decided that the simplest way to do that was just to write as if they were part of the communities and circles I interact with in real life.
Which, ah... okay, so 90% of my RL socializing is at BDSM play parties, munches, and other events, because my main local community is the kink community. (When I write about kink in my stories, I'm writing from the perspective of an actual practitioner. I feel this is very much a strength of mine. So many kink authors have never actually done the things they're writing about. Though admittedly, since my kinks include some unreal shit, I haven't done all of it. Snuff is only for fantasy, not for RL :D But I digress.)
So hey, let's add other kinks to the pseudo-incest kink, why not? A little BDSM is a lot of fun! And playing with a dom/sub dynamic in the greater power struggle of Thor and Loki's relationship has a lot of potential.
But I also pulled from something else I know a lot about. If their relationship is going to play out at kinky play parties, what about the family thing? What about Odin, or Hela? Well... What if Asgard was a construction company? Asgard Building Co. or something. Odin founded it as a shady-as-hell operation, with his eldest, Hela, way back in the day. But he decided to turn over a new leaf and at least look good, and she disagreed, and he threw her out, then adopted a kid so he'd look like a shining community pillar, and started acting all good and noble and shit.
I think maybe in this, since I'm working in a normal human lifespan, Thor might be old enough to dimly recall his sister, but he hasn't seen her since he was seven or eight. (The "turning to a snake then stabbing" at age 8 incident in this is, I think a roughouse gone wrong where Thor got shoved off the top bunk of a bunk bed and had to get stitches. My brothers did that to each other as kids, and one of them still has the scar. See what I mean about drawing from real life?)
Anyhow. So Thor works construction with his dad Odin. Loki used to do the bookkeeping, but embezzled a bunch of money and got disowned for it, Thor hasn't seen him in years. Construction work is a great explanation for the kind of body Thor's got, right?
All these ideas come from the fact that my SO and his brother used to run their dad's construction company, though. That's why that came to mind, and why the "guy in the field, guy in the office" dynamic seemed immediate and obvious, since my SO was their books guy and his brother did the actual building work. It works super well for the conflict in this story, doesn't it?
But of course as I describe this idea to my SO, he goes "So you're shipping me with my brother, then."
Oops.
I guess?
I mean no, of course not. His brother is in fact a looker without his shirt on, because yes you get damn fit working construction every day, but good gods I wouldn't touch the guy in an actual relationship with a 50 foot pole, and trying to imagine him and my SO as a pair is just nonsensically laughable.
So no.
But man, I just about died when he pointed that out. The unintended consequences of drawing on real life experience for your stories, I guess. Ahem. *blush*
Anyway!
So the story is basically going to flip back and forth between an intense if slightly uncomfortable D/s dynamic developing between the pair during play parties, and their dealing with the fact that it turns out Odin never changed his will and Hela was still down as his heir and got the entire company, and they're trying to get it back from her, and meanwhile she's starting to do under the table shit and take mob deals and just run the company's reputation into the ground.
Should be fun. :D
