My "all things ancient Greece" fixation has grown another branch: chitons!

They're so easy!

You can literally make a complete, almost perfectly authentic one with a bedsheet, a safety pin, and a length of ribbon. (The weave of the fabric and the *precise* shape of the safety pins are the inaccuracies!!!!! Yes, ancient Greeks had safety pins, look up "bow fibula", it's amazing. :D Well, and though a ribbon belt was an option historically a proper zoster was more likely to be leather, threaded with ribbon or yarn on the end to tie into a knot kinda like a corset rather than buckle.)

I've made one already, in a vague "Zagreus colors, why not?" color scheme, though it's hardly accurate to the game either.

I'm buying fabric to make at *least* two more, just gotta find a white I can stand, as I want to make Hadesgame Ares colored one, so white red and gold. White clothing is always suspect to me, but white *is* his main color, so...

I remember Jo Walton talking about chitons and how simple they are to replicate in The Just City. It's very cool to see it done!

This one's not bad! My fabric I ordered to make more is light jersey knit (t-shirt fabric!) so the next ones are gonna be less accurate but suuuuuuuuuper comfy.

Complete authenticity is for the SCA and people who zoom in on their 8k televisions to pick nits. The rest of us just want a good look that's comfortable to wear.

Thank you! It is actually super comfy. I made a peplos (similar thing but with a sewn side seam) that I'm just wearing around the house today, and I've ordered some jersey fabric because I think a chiton in t-shirt material would be IDEAL summerwear.

Sometimes it's fun to do a deep dive into exactly how a thing was made, and be as accurate as you can. I have some thoughts about a loom I'm getting soon and accurate historical fabric weaving... But a t-shirt chiton is fun too!

I know! In my researching how they're made I ran into somebody who does Greek characters in their local SCA, and I think that's really cool.
