Money, pain, and other fun stuff
Jun. 10th, 2003 04:58 pmWell yesterday was... interesting. I started out bright and early with a list of about 20 job openings that I at least qualify for. (I still boggle at the janitorial position that requires a year of experience. I mean really!) So anyhow, after making a dozen phone calls to the ones that wanted you to phone in, I headed over to the temp place that was taking applications for an assembly line thingummy. I used to assemble Chums eyeglass holders (you know, those little cloth things that keep your glasses from coming off while you're playing basketball or water skiing or whatever.) That was about as mind-numbingly boring as it gets, but a job is a job, and at least I had the needed experience, right? Well, I get to the temp place and there's like twenty people there just then, applying for the same thing. I filled out the application anyhow, but I didn't get the job.
So I head on my merry way to the next stop on my list, but lo and behold, the temp people called me back just an hour or so later. No assembly line, but someplace needed a secretary /now./ They asked if I could head to the place right then, and I, broke and badly in need of fundage that I am, of course said yes. So I worked one afternoon as a secretary, which was, frankly, easier than I'd thought it would be.
That takes care of my morning and afternoon. The evening had a hike scheduled. With summer on, it stays light late, so a bunch of folks from church decided to get together and hike Waterfall Canyon. It's a gorgeous hike, but it started right after I got off the secretary gig, so I went in my slacks and black shoes I'd worn then. (Not dress shoes, or I would have changed, but not tennies either. Imitation Docs.) I figured it wasn't really that long of a hike so I'd be fine.
I figured wrong, because by the time we were near the top of the canyon I had a huuuuuge blister on my left foot. And by the time we started down again it had a companion on the right. It was, to say the least, painful. Thankfully I have a high pain tolerance, so I made it down the canyon without having to be carried.
After that a bunch of people were going out for burgers. I was going to go with them, but I was too tired. Limping down the whole canyon was too much for me, so I ended up going home a crashing.
So that was my day yesterday. I have two huge blisters here now and a miniscule check on the way. Fun, no?
