I've been getting more into the zine scene.
The original attraction was on the one hand, the affordable price point of interesting art and stuff from interesting people, and on the other, and ability to make a book, if a small one, exist with nothing more than a printer, a stapler, and some time. (And a bone folder. If you're gonna do more than one or two at a time, a bone folder, definitely.)
But the fact that zines are rooted in, and remain strongly a part of a radicalized culture of free expression, queerness, punk, etc. is also really neat to me.
I got linked to a zine group via reddit, and was wary, because reddit. (Bro culture there is so damn toxic sometimes.) But nope! They're zine people. So they have rooms specifically for queer, feminist, disability-focused, POC-authored, etc. zines. I think the only thing they're missing that I'd like is a *specifically* sex positive zine room, rather than a general "everything nsfw" room.
Anyhow, dunno that I'm going to be doing anything wildly punk yet but I have been thinking that a lot of the darker stuff I make, that publishers often won't touch, would make good zines! The idea of taking Like Sparta and expanding that into a series of punk/horror/etc. zines sounds fun!
P.S. Like Sparta is a story I wrote for a call for "Antifa Splatterpunk" stories, which wasn't accepted, but which I thought was really good, and very fun, so I published it myself. If you like seeing neo-nazis get their comeuppance, and like or don't mind gore and mutilation, well... Have a look! It's only $6. :3
P.P.S. the zine server I'm in is discussing the Radical Librarian/bibliopunk movement, which makes me think of you,
silveradept :D
P.P.P.S. I typed that as Radial Librarian at first, which is an entirely different thing!
