I've been thinking today about the Paint Your Own gryphons, and I had a flash of brilliant idea!

The problem was that implementing said idea required purchase of one more gryphon. And it just so happens that right now they have a batch of PYO gryphons up on ebay, so, well....

I gave away one, and sold one, so I currently only own four, but I just bought two new ones, so it goes back up to six. Whee.

Anyhow, idea! (This rocks so much!) I got a red eyed one in the initial round of early releases with the idea that I was going to make an evil gryphon. I like evil color schemes, and they sculpt itself has this self-satisfied smirk that goes really well on an evil critter. So I was brainstorming notions for evil. I thought of and discarded a lot of half-baked things, and then it came to me! The balrog, from the LOTR movies, is awesomely evil, and it has this crackled black over fire thing going. What if I could replicate that on the feather texture of these things? It had to be tried! Layered washes starting with yellow and working up to red, and then a final, careful coat of drybrushing in soot black. It would be perfect.

But the red eyed gryphon is a deep, blood red. For a creature like that it needed something brighter. I thought of using my orange for a bit, but that still wasn't right. What really was called for was a bright, light yellow.

Which happens to be one of the colors currently for sale on e-bay. So I got one. And then I gave in to the urge to get a grey eyed one as well, as grey is awesome and goes with everything.

The grey will be squirreled away to appreciate in value, along with my orange and red, whilst the yellow becomes a gryphon demon, and the blue a firecat gryphon.

They shall be purely awesome if they come out right!

You know, having still not even touched my gryphon yet, I have to say the Balrog idea occurred to me too in my ponderings. I still don't know for sure what my final colours will be, but good luck to you in your attempt to recreate that look. Might be tricky but should be fun to experiment with, all the same. :)

I am desperately avoiding the grey eyes on eBay... that's a damn cool look with those eyes...

I love the balrog/evil gryphon idea. I really, really hope it works out so I can see a picture. hee.

I had never heard of this paint your own gryphon thing. I may have to try this now. (Because what my home definitely needs are even more gryphons. Really. And what I need is another way to split my creative time, since I have no ability to focus on any one thing anyway. :D )

Do you know about Windstones? You must go and look at them! http://www.windstoneeditions.com/dragonpg4.htm Aren't they shiny? There's a full list of all the stuff they do at http://www.windstoneeditions.com/index2.htm

The gryphons are listed under "New Products" but are currently available only through e-bay, and only in limited batches. They tell us that eventually you'll be able to buy them in stores, but not for some time yet. If you search for Windstone on ebay you'll find them. Along with lots of things that I shouldn't look at because I really don't have the money...

(I am so obsessive about Windstones!)

I do! I actually have a gryphon candlelamp from them, which is no longer available. The candle sits between the wings, and the eyes are red glass, so they glow and flicker red in the candle light. :D

(I got it at Gargoyles Statuary (http://www.gargoylestatuary.com/) here in Seattle; they had to do some serious digging because they hadn't realized it was no longer being made, and they somehow managed to find one . . .)

Awesome! Though I never liked the lamps and scones and things nearly so much as the plain statues. Well, except for the bookends, those are neat. Especially the dragon ones. I have this thing for dragons...
