The need for clear communication
Oct. 4th, 2006 09:30 pmSo the fellow arguing that furry art is not like other art is still an idiot. An artist is an artist, and a commission is still a commission, furry or not. You pay money, you have a right to expect certain things, from a furry or from anybody else.
However, it seems that his statement: "But to expect furry art to work on a purely professional level? That goes too far." was supposed to mean that it "goes too far" to expect 100% of furry artists to be 100% professional 100% of the time. Which realistically, I must admit is the case. One cannot expect anybody to be professional at all times, as I myself have said! There are times and places for professionalism, and times and places when one can take the "hat" off and relax, after all.
Nevertheless, his point is totally and utterly annoying to me, because he's insisting that because an artist is furry, if one doesn't know said artist to be a real professional, one should expect the furry, being merely a furry, to behave in unprofessional ways, and one has no right to get upset when said artist takes months or even years to give one a return on one's money. Because, you know, they're furries. They're just in it for the fuzz, they shouldn't be required to be real professionals, furry is just a fandom, after all.
Screw that. You pay somebody money to do something, you have every right to expect them to do it! You take money from somebody to do something, you freaking DO IT, whether you're furry, bald, or purple with puce polka-dots! If you can't behave in something at least vagely resembling a professional manner, you have no business taking anybody's money to do anything! End of story!
Meh.

Date: 2006-10-05 02:44 pm (UTC)A painting is a painting and art by ANYONE'S standards. Does it become less art because what is depicted in that painting changes?
And why shouldn't an artist be as professional as any other artists just because they paint furries? Again, a prfoessional artist is a professional artists - they are no less a professional artist just because the subject matter of their art is a furry.
And if you offer ANY service for anyone - artist, furry, whatever - you are expwected to provide it within a timely manner. Being a furry is NO excuse

Date: 2006-10-05 07:06 pm (UTC)I also think that "you get what you pay for" is a good saying. If you paid $200, there is an expectation for better service than those who paid $20. Furry artwork is traditionally rock-bottom in price, and this may well be because the level of service provided is not quite on the level of pro artwork. Many of the people offering to do furry art are schoolkids, after all, not full-time artists. There are some artists that charge higher prices, and commissions from them should be (and usually are) delivered at a higher level of service.
Nothing really excuses weeks or months waiting for a commission with no progress or feedback, though. Even kids can act professional to that extent.
