In the world of fursuiting, I'm something of a big fish in a little pond. There are probably not more than a hundred people in the world who seriously make fursuits. (And by "seriously" I mean have made more than one, will continue to make more regularly, and have some real skill at doing so.) There are hundreds and hundreds of dabblers, but given then many thousands of furries out there, the number of fursuit makers really is quite small. And I'm creeping steadily up towards the top. I'll never upset Lance Ikegawa's place, he works too differently for me to even try, but someday I might be on par with LatinVixen or Scribblefox. I think I've finally hit near parity with most others out there.

I like that feeling. As awful of me as it is, I like it when I look at people's fursuiting work and I know I could do a million times better.

I think part of the reason I'm just not as enthused about art is that I'm near the bottom of the heap there, as far as people who are more than dabblers go, and honestly lack the skill to rise. And it's sometimes depressing, when I put forth my best efforts, and see other effortlessly pass them by.

Guess I'll stick to fursuit making.

"Do what you're good at", I think my mother used to tell me. Sounds about right to me.

There's nothing wrong with pride in your work (even if part of that is saying "I can do that sooo much better.")

You'll do great at it, and I'm going to say that your art skills are definitely not shabby, so I wouldn't be too worried about them.

Which, in the note of dabbling, I got quite a bit of money for my birfday. Can I remind you of that Entwined Dragons wall hanging I was musing about this summer? I can't remember for the life of me what post I commented on, though, and I didn't mark it with my Memories. But I'm still interested, if you're not swamped.

Hrm. Do you mean the firebird wall hanging I have? Or were you talking about commissioning a new wall hanging? Because I don't have access to a loom anymore, just that simple. Can't make new stuff, no way to make it.

No, I was thinking of just a drawing/painting poster-sized, or however big you can get it within, say, $100? Dio you remember I was looking at your portfolio of dragons you had drawn and was musing about a commission of two dragons entertwined with specific colors to represent the hubby and I. What kind of a price range would you set something like that?

Ah! *nods* My memory isn't the best. Around $100 would be what I'd consider a reasonable price for something like that.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Shall I wait for the Halloween rush to be over and for me to get back from class so I can find that series of comments in your archives?

sigh. Okay. I've looked through all your posts in May and all of them in June and I have yet to find that stream of comments you and I had about my concept for this piece. I remember you telling me, "Wait until I'm moved/settled in and then suggest it to me again." I also remember you posted a link in the entry to your portfolio of drawn images that you've got on your blog that I hadn't seen before. I also remember you had cleaned up everything in your portfolio and then posted this entry, but I could be wrong about that because I found that time period and no evidence of my stream of thought.

I'm frustrated now. Did we post on an entry of mine, maybe? No. Arg. Looks like my memory is as bad as yours.

Bah. Why couldn't that non-stalkery invention thing been installed on LJ then? It would be extremely useful now.

I have no memory whatsoever of this discussion at all. I do remeber you mentioning it, vaguely, but I don't recall any details.

Also - portfolion on my blog? I have a website with my art gallery. I don't have a portfolio, as such.

Perhaps you're confusing me with somebody else?

Website is here: http://www.bladespark.com

Right. Your art gallery. That's what I meant.

And I'm sure I talked to you about it. I referenced to several of your drawings in the art gallery of dragons and picked and chose elements on certain ones I liked and would want included in the piece. I'll look in my Email folder. Maybe it was a series of Emails.

Okay. My memory is like a sieve, so I probably just forgot it.

Okay. I'm feeling really lost right now. I can't find the convo. I know it's there, somewhere in your archives, and I know we had this convo sometime this summer. Right now, I say: How much do you want to do the commission? Just idealistically, not like now because of time crunches or whatever. Because it's there, somewhere. And I stick to it. And I'm reminding myself and pushing it because I've got the money now and blank spots on my wall and a lull in homework so I can think about it. I just can't find it. Grrrrr.

Why do you need the previous conversation? You have my art there. You have me here. Tell me what you want.

I'll try, I suppose. I just... I had the entire concept down and figured it all out. It's like losing the entire paper I just wrote. Same kind of feeling. I can reproduce it again, it'll just feel secondary. You know?

Yeah, I guess so. I really have no idea where it was though.

Okay, SPark. I've figured it out, I think. How's the best way to relay the details so neither of us lose them this time? I've got this entry tracked, but it's more important for you to keep track of the details, since I'll be paying you to do the work.

My e-mail is probably the best way to send stuff so I don't lose it. spark.costumes@gmail.com
