I would like to note that Something Awful's claim to be a troll-free community is completely false.

It is merely mostly free of completely brainless trolls, that is ones who haven't got ANY subtlety at all, and just say offensive things bluntly and directly. (It even has a few of those, but I'll admit it's largely free of them.) It is jam-pakced, however, with trolls of the slightly more intelligent variety, who word their trolling to sound, at first glance, like curiosity, or something else innocuous.

It's SomethingAwful, for God's sake. Were you REALLY expecting a troll-free environment? It's the source of nearly ALL of the funny on the internets. Any of them! ;)

I don't know about that. Because up until quite recently I hadn't seen anything from there, and I HAD seen plenty of funny.

And I didn't find very much there that was funny. Interesting, occasionally, but mostly mean spirited, nasty, and offensive.

Oh, but didn't you know? Every single fad or meme in the entire universe was invented by SA. At least, if you believe what they like to say, anyway. Though the same could be said for many internet communities. Everyone wants to take credit for each new fad to spread over "teh intarweb".

Immersing myself in crap to try and find the few gems has proved to be not worth it, so I probably won't be spending further time there. Admittedly I did enjoy one thread very much. But then I was insulted for my contribution to it, and that was just too annoying for me to care to return.

I used to waste so much time on that website. They I realized it was just a e-pissing contest of negative people trying to prove how superior they were to other equally as pathetic people on the internet, and then I found better things to do with my time.

I had a look at it myself, and I have to agree. Some random guy from the thread scanned over my journal just because I'm friends with SPark, and felt the need to say that at first I seemed attractive enough, but because my husband plays MTG occasionally, I must somehow be too screwed up for normal guys.
And by normal guys he means what,... him? Hehehee

I think that's the problem there. Most big, active web communities are centered around a fandom, like MTG, or Furry, or Star Trek, or whatever, but SA isn't, so it's where a lot of the people who think they're superior to the geeks and fans end up, as it's the largest place I know of that's geared towards that kind of thing.

JJ still spends a fair amount of time in there, and he does find some really funny stuff, but there's a high ick to fun ratio in there, so from now on I'll let him filter it for me and link me to the best of it, I think. Going in there myself is depressing.

Soemthing Awful's greatest reputation is that it is one of the biggest sources of Internet negativity and trolling (4chan may also contribute a statistically significant amount). In such an environment, occasionally good things appear when the creativity is harnessed to beneficial ends. Still, I know the Goons more as being CEKSM than anything else.

Yea a lot of them will call me a loser for being a furry, but then I'm also an environmental activist and doing important research that will contribute to our further understanding of how global warming if effecting ecosystems, while they sit on their ass all day and complain and down on furries.
And I'm probably a lot better looking than most of them and can get laid by much better looking women too :P

So therefore I long since quite caring about what SA has to say about me and my fandom, because in retorspect the goons are just as if not more pathetic than most "average" furries.
