I made that realization concerning my very annoying grandmother when I got mine. We didn't tell her we had them and the next time she visited instead of the usual couple of hours, she stayed 10mins and now insists my mother come to her house. I told my mother "If that's what it takes to keep her out of my house, I'll set their tank up right in the living room across from the front door."

In the summer of my fifth grade year, my class had a pair of garter snakes that needed a home for the summer. I volunteered. My mother took this development with philosophical grace, and helped me care for them all summer, including assisting with planting greenery in their tank and feeding them crickets.

... my mother is kind of awesome, really.

Long ago, my mother once cheerily took in the class guinea pig over half-term. Unfortunately Rowan (and with a name like that, guess the species...) did not view this as Helpful Class Solidarity so much as Considerate Acquisition of Lunch. Caged too - oh, weren't her humans wonderful?

The guinea pig (and my relationship with my mother) thankfully survived, but not without a lot of effort...

My mom was always the one bringing home/catching the unusual pets.

"Hey, wake up, there's a snake in the yard!"

"Hey, look, a tortoise! I put it in a box!"

"Hey, you boys want a tarantula?"

"Ooh, let's name the iguana stanly!"
