Cute

Random things at nearly 5 am. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy am I awake?

I'm trying to figure out why this fellow makes me go "awwwwwwwww, lookit his liddle face!" and think he's adorable, while this guy just makes me go "ugh, creepy alien thing!" They're both snakes. They both have the same general body shape, they're both large constrictor infants. They both have the narrowed neck, back-bulging head, and blank eyes. The only real difference is the nose shape. Ball pythons (that's our fellow in photo one there) have a kind of rounded snout, and an almost-smile. Whereas red-tailed boas (the guy in number two) are pointier in the nose and the eyes don't really stand out that much from the pattern. (Okay, the ball I used is a weird morph, but the eyes on normals are pretty visible too.) In fact I think the eyes of the boa are smaller compared to the head. Is that all it takes? Slightly larger eyes and something is cute?

Weirdness. Do you guys agree with me on cuteness of first/notcuteness of second?

Go away.

Yes.
Also, on the perception of cuteness: you're dead on - all you need is large eyes (preferably oriented for binocular vision) and a snub face. See also human babies, which have both these characteristics relative to adult humans...

The first is curled up more tightly and the picture is more of the face then the second one. Which makes it more personal. And the coloration just looks softer. So yeah, the first one seems cuter, but they're probably equally so.

It's no those photos, it's those species. I've seen redtail boas in person, and they're creepy then too.

Hmm... Never seen one myself, so I really can't judge. I was just calling it by what I saw of it. Oh well :)

I think they're both cute, though the first one actually weirds me out more because of the colour - yellowish head, white body. I've never seen that before! The second one looks a bit more familiar and so cuter to me.

I may just be strange, though.

I am also completely opposite. I've never felt weirded out by a snake before, but the colouration of the pale one gives me the creeps for some reason. The large eyes bother me too. heh! Interesting. I also tend to prefer less-human-baby-like features (I'll take a pointy snout over a round, flat, or snub face anyday).

I don't like how the second one's face is kind of lost in it's coloration. It's the same with black cats. Their faces are so hard to see and it sorta' gives me the creeps... so yes, I completely agree.

meh

I like them both.
