I often hear the phrase "enlightened times" which, of course, means that in the modern age we are not barbarians. We've discovered human kindness and compasion, and tolerance, and so on. Well, [livejournal.com profile] bellatrys wrote a rather interesting entry a while back, which points out some evidence that these times may not be as enlightened as we think they are. It's an interesting read, I'd recommend checking it out.

For as much as we think we've progressed, all it takes is something to push on us, and suddenly there's a lot of atavism in the populace. Why can't a progressive society stay progressive the first time something tries to push it back into more conservative days?

Thank you for sharing! And no, these times in general don't seem much more enlightened. At times, they seem even less so.

By the way, not related, but something I just read recently, and thought you might enjoy reading also: http://siderea.livejournal.com/201206.html

The pessimistic side of me tends to agree, especially given the recent discussion I had with my dad trying to convince him that a) waterboarding is torture (I failed as I have before) and b) torture of any kind is evil and should not be used by our government under any circumstance.
