So Furaffinity, the furry art gallery, has been down for several days now.
They got a new server, and took everything down in order to put that in place. It went up for mere seconds when it was scheduled to, apparently, and then crashed under the weight of the addicts who swarmed to check their accounts after a whole day without them. It was down for several more days, before returning in the wee hours of the night last night. I was able to access and post then, probably because nobody else was up at 2 am. But it's down again now, with no idea of when it will be back, and the forums, which were on a separate server, have also crashed under the load of people trying to find out what's up. The FA admins are responding to individual comments on the FA livejournal, but haven't thought to make an actual post explaining WTF to people there.
I'm sure the people who run it are working hard, yada, yada, yada, but honestly... this sucks. And it's just the latest in a long line of sucking, including lovely things like the search function being "temporarily" disabled since before I joined the site, or all new registration being indefinitely suspended for something like a month (I'd check exactly how long it's been, but I can't access the forums, funny thing) because of one or two trolls who got accounts. Which... wtf! Banning anybody at all from signing up is a solution to trolling? But I suppose it's also a solution to the traffic overload, sort of, so sure, why not?
I really wish I had an alternative to go to, but Jaxpad is arbitrary, (some of my tail photos got removed for having a human being in them, and some of my other art got removed for being "non-anthro" and I got fed up with that and deleted my whole account there) Artspots and VCL are elitist, (you have to be a "good enough" artist to get accepted, and you also have to jump through a lot of hoops, AND they also have silly policies about anthro, human, and non-anthro art) and everywhere else is tiny. I want a gallery so I can get publicity. If it's not going to get any traffic, there's really no point. (Also, it seems that at least one smaller site has crashed because people from FA were going there while FA was down, and the traffic was too much.)
It's very annoying. I joined FA to get new faces and new customers, and that's worked out for me fairly well, but if it's going to continue to be unable to handle new growth the way it currently is, it's not going to do me any good. I can't get new traffic while the site is down!

Date: 2007-11-27 08:25 pm (UTC)And I know what you mean about art sites being all anal about 'not being good enough'. I mean.. Elfwood makes you pass a series of questions before your account is accepted. You actually have to STUDY their policies and lil tiny weird rules n such before you can be a member there. Whatever happened to just having to write down a silly little series of numbers and lettles from inside a scrambled box to tell that your not a bot... -_-
What's FA gunna do next..? Ban all the accounts who have more pics than a 16 year old myspace account..? Oh yeah.. That actually wouldn't bother me personally.. I hate people who decide to post more pics of their stupid looking face like it's f*ckin myspace.. >< RAHH!
But as for deleting your pics because of human parts in them, how much humon are we talking about..? Maybe just an arm or something, or jus a full body pic featuring the tail or somethin..? I'm curious... Some people are just so anal/stupid about some shit.
