I finished it! Glee! Joy! Happyness! It's done! I'm never doing another one! (Well... probably never. My brain keeps pointing out little things I could fix "next time" but then my sanity kicks in and goes "aieee, noooooooooo!" So we'll see. Maybe if somebody offers me sufficient incentive I might. But probably not.)

If you want to see her HUGE so you can see my screwups (ha!) I saved those three best shots super-huge too:

And if you want to see her from every angle imaginable, well, http://bladespark.topcities.com/angelsong01.JPG through http://bladespark.topcities.com/angelsong21.JPG are uploaded for your viewing pleasure.

The night is still young! Well... okay, I guess technically the "night" is over, as it's "morning" now, but I refuse to have my morning until either I have slept, or the sun comes up, whichever happens first.

Well, note the positioning of the head on this particular toy pony. Should wings of this size have been correctly placed on the shoulders, they would block the front of the head, which is an artistic no-no in almost all cases. The heads on most ponies (though not all) are not circular, and won't line up correctly if turned to another position, so in this case the artist is stuck with either blocking the face, or having buttwings.

Which, of course, to me means don't use that particular pony! Or use much smaller wings, and angle them back! But quite a few pony artists use buttwings instead. Though I think this is pretty much the worst case of buttwings I've seen. Normally they're actually more like lower back wings.

Ew. I see what you mean.

I think you can get away with attaching them a titch higher than you have (My inner 14 year old, who is still UTTERLY obsesssed with horses, goes all screechy about the anatomy no matter where you stick 'em :P) but those... ee. And on such an otherwise nice pony.

I *love* the shape of your wings!

Pretty wings. And excellent framing material as well. I like the work and the photos.

It's a beautifully done pony in all other respects, but the wings just ruin the whole effect for me. Not only are they buttwings, but they look shoddy and hastily stuck on.

Your angel is lovely. I particularly like the base pose you chose for her. It makes her look like she's singing alleluias.

Those wings are gorgeous - how did you make them?

I start with punching holes in the shoulders and running a fairly sturdy wire through. Then I made a sort of thin, flat base shape from the clay that runs along the wire so I have a plane to attach feathers to. Then I made each of the primary feathers, which are longer than the amount you can see here, and let them cure, and then attached them to the base. Then I layered the next two layers of feathers over that, on either side.

*sobs with joy* Someone else who hates buttwings! I hate backwings as well, and most are one or the other!

Heee.

Backwings to me are... tolerable. I don't like them, and I'd never do them, but on a pose with the head to the side, I can see why they're used. On some of the poses they get put on though, no way! They look so silly.

I guess I should clarify what kind of wings I'm thinking of. The ones with one tiny little connection in the middle of the back-that drives me nuts. A properly support wing would go down the back, of course, or it wouldn't have enough surface to lift the pony, presuming they really could fly. Heh, this discussion did make me realize I need to pull a bit of the sculpting on the wings I'm working on down a bit more onto the shoulder, though, so it doesn't look like I'm doing what I complain about!

I should add, since I seem to have neglected doing so, that your wings are absolutely lovely.

He he he. Ah! On that front it's the wings that are shaped like triangles that get me!

I mean theoretically an animal could fly just as well with buttwings as with shoulderwings! It'd just fly butt-in-the-air and look dorky. But you can't fly when your wings are HUGE, but taper down to a teeeeeeeeeeeny-tiny little join that's a centimeter at most across. I mean come on!
