Imagine that you're going somewhere. It's not really that far, but you're going there on foot, and you have a great many things you need to take with you. Your hands are full, you're carrying something under your arm, maybe there's something heavy slung over your shoulder too. You can manage, but it's awkward and heavy, and you're going very slowly. If somebody were to approach you, and say that your journey would be easier if you added one more thing to all those that you carry, you might call them insane.

But what if the one more thing were a hand-cart that you could dump it all in and tow along behind you with ease?

In sunday school today we talked about the concept of being yoked, (as in oxen yokes, not as in egg yolks :D ) and about bearing burdens. And then in Relief Society we discussed giving service, and helping others. I think those things are related. We carry a lot of burdens in our lives, but there is a strange alchemy by which taking on additional burdens that don't belong to us somehow makes the whole thing much easier. How often have you lent somebody a helping hand with their troubles, and felt your own problems resting more lightly on your shoulders?

And our duties, promises, and responsibilities can also partake of this strange alchemy.

I work six days a week. Sunday is my one day off. One might think that the last thing I'd want to do with my single, solitary spot of vacation is to spend at least three hours of it at church. To many it might seem to be insanity, to add that to all the other burdens I carry. And yet the burden of my church duties, and the time (and money) I spend on my religion are things that lighten the rest of my load far more than they add to it.

If your burdens seem more than you can bear, perhaps you too might consider shouldering for a while a little extra burden that isn't yours, and see what it does for you.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" -Jesus (Matt. 11:28-30)
