Write Every Day, December 14
Dec. 14th, 2019 07:01 pmI am full of holiday cheer!
And by "holiday cheer" I mean mulled wine. This post is a bit late today not for brainweasels or lack of spoons, but because I was at a planning meeting for a Perchtenlauf!
Since you probably haven't heard of that, it's a northern European winter holiday tradition, related to things like the Krampus or the Mari Lwyd, which involves monster costumes, chanting, ringing bells etc. in order to scare the winter dark away. So we all dress up as various monsters and march through the streets making as much noise as possible. It's very fun! Today we had a meeting to plan the route, and about half as many people showed up as RSVPd, so there was a *lot* of mulled wine to go around. :D
Only an alibi sentence today, because of that, but tomorrow should be more productive. And I did get my editing done yesterday! Wooo!
How are you all doing?

Date: 2019-12-15 03:46 am (UTC)15 Dec: I started the day at 2,816 words, deleted 802, and ended at 3009 words, so I wrote 995 today. (And having done that calculation, I may have to go and write another 5, just to get to a nice round 1000. *g*)

Date: 2019-12-15 06:13 am (UTC)I have been working for approximately two hours and wrote six pages, but cannot tell the actual word count because it is 1 am and I am going to sleep in lieu of typing it up. I started an exercise where I was giving each scene a title and putting it on an index card so I can physically see where everything is, and early on in that I got an idea for a scene that was not on the list and paused to write it.

Date: 2019-12-15 07:03 am (UTC)but like I woke up with the entire next scene in my head in its full shining glory, solved the problems with the character interactions that were giving me fits, every word perfectly placed…
and the first thing I had to do today was get Thea-kitty to the vet (because, as the vet told us Thursday evening, they cannot wring out a tail and get a usable urine sample, and we were probably the last appointment before the vet closed for the day)
and by the time we were halfway there, I'd lost most of the scene
and then NaNo afterparty and then fetch Thea back from the vet and I basically haven't had any brain since
though also I did finally put words to a bit that's been in the back of my head for a while? it's not likely to ever be a fic (it's spun off of somebody else's fic and not in a way I think I can either make it my own thing or do something creative enough with the other writer's thing to justify asking permission, and if they have a blanket permission statement I haven't found it) but it's fun and now it's in words

Date: 2019-12-15 08:49 am (UTC)Day 14: I managed to actually spend a real chunk of time writing today, thanks to peer-pressure (a write-in with friends). Hooray! Not super impressive in terms of wordcount, but I did some research and started a new chapter!

Date: 2019-12-15 01:23 pm (UTC)My husband is a Dutch-Indonesian immigrant to the US. His mom grew up on the island of Sumatra, in a tiny village that was completely obliterated by the 2004 tsunami. (My MIL and her family had to flee Indonesia following the end of the Japanese occupation, but she loved her hometown and often spoke of it.)
Anyway, on St. Nicholas' Day when she was a child, Krampus would visit the local school and would climb through a window into a classroom and then put into a sack and carry away a "bad" child while also beating said child with a stick!
For a few years running, that child was my mother-in-law. She didn't find out until years later that that was because Krampus was played by her mother, who would use burnt cork to darken her features and put half-potatoes in her cheeks to make them look malformed. And she chose my mother-in-law because my MIL was a pain in the butt, according to said MIL herself. (She was the youngest girl and her father's favorite. Her mother's mother, who was Chinese and practiced traditional witchcraft, once tied my MIL to a tree and set a fire at her feet to 'smoke the demons out'. It didn't work, according to my MIL. ;-)
Anyway, that was a ramble, but of all of my MIL's many amazing tales of her childhood on Sumatra, the Krampus story is one of my favorites. My MIL was a neat lady, and I think she'd have appreciated me sharing it with you. I KNOW she'd have loved to watch your Perchtenlauf!
On a different note, I added 757 words to the Bond/Q story yesterday. It's turning into a thing other than the thing I had been planning, but that's okay--I like the mystery! Lol!
