Haven't gotten my alibi sentence out today, hopefully I will. Also hopeful: surviving until the 8th, when the goober child's school starts again, without yeeting the kid out a window. (P.S. I love "yeet". I am not super hip to what kids these days are saying, but "yeet" is great.)

eight hundred words into the next scene of firelight, plus some tweaks earlier for consistency

(I keep thinking of a couple particular tweaks when I'm lying in bed trying to go to sleep and don't want even to reach for my tablet to note what the tweak was and then they're gone by the time I wake up. same two or three tweaks, too, I distinctly remember thinking "I thought of this already and I haven't fixed it yet" multiple times…)

I think if I went on a hyperfocus marathon, I could have firelight done in draft by morning, or almost? I'm only like 10-12K from the last line, I wrote "manic Monday (you can fall apart)" in a single hyperfocus marathon and that's 8.4K, and it's hard not hyperfocusing rn?

I am feeling crap enough without dealing with the effects of not eating, drinking, sleeping, peeing, or moving anything but my fingers for several hours running, and therefore I am actively avoiding hyperfocusing on this

I get the bedtime thing too. And half the time I get up and write it, because worrying about forgetting the great change I just thought of will keep me up if I don't.

I have an automatic focus-interrupter in the house, in the form of a needy three year old. :3

My goodness, your kid is home a long time! Here in NYC the DOE expects them back bright eyed and bushy tailed on the second... and apparently seriously debated having them in school on the 23rd as well! (That was wishful thinking. No way in hell anybody would actually make their kids go to school on a lousy Monday, the last day before Winter Break. Thank goodness the DOE saw reason on that front.)

She's not in a regular school, she's in a county-sponsored early-intervention program for language delayed and autism spectrum kids, which is run by the university, and so is on the university's schedule as far as holidays and breaks go. I gather that if she were in kindergarten she'd be back much sooner.

I think I've only heard "yeet" here and on Twitter, and I'm pretty sure in most of those instances it was older folks, so obviously, we're all really good at stealing from the youth. I have NOT heard it from my 17-18-year-old students, but I intend to ask them about it when school's back in session.

And I picked up "yeet" on Discord, I run a server where I'm pretty sure I'm *the* oldest person present and the average age is well under half mine.

I got beta comments! I got a title! And I took all that and published, woot!

Which brings me up to 56K published words for the year! That's my usual range -- for the last six years, I've been publishing 55-65K words a year. This year I was way behind for much of the year, and I had pretty much resigned myself to not making that usual benchmark. And I was never quite okay with that, even though I added 30K to an unpublished WIP this year. But I spent early December, having a last hurrah before I went back to work full-time, and that story proved to be 14K, enough to bump me back up into my usual annual ballpark.

And today I published it, so it's official: 56K for the year, hurrah!

Finally sat down and plotted out what happens on what day (or during / after which class) for the first ten days of the novel. Things are a little more packed than I thought they were but I also really don't know what happens beyond the broad strokes for the five days after that. I think we've come to the part where I have to sit down and just power through writing about stuff that might happen then and see what makes sense. I've been putting this off for a while but I guess tomorrow is when I start really trying it. (The five days after *that*, I know what's going on and then we're probably at the point where I toss most of what's written after that out the window and try and give myself a better ending.) At least I'm on vacation for the week, I'm probably going to need the writing time.
