I awoke to a friends list full of people reposting that they find repost memes annoying and telling me that if I ignore their little meme I must not believe in gay rights.

I now eye you all funny.

(And really! That gay rights thing is worse than a chain letter, as far as I'm concerned. You cannot just ignore it, becuase the thing says "If you don't believe in gay rights just ignore this!" So by ignoring it, which is what I really would rather have done with it, I would be making a statement I do not wish to make. Therefore I am forced to address the thing, even if I don't copy and paste it and pass it on.)

I'm not ignoring it, I'm just not reposting it. I believe that the world is not black and white and that "if you're not with us then you're against us" thinking is supremely ironic when contrasted with the sort of openmindedness that the actual post was trying to convey.

I don't know why people think things like this are anything other than herd behavior; I find it much more interesting when someone writes their own thoughts. Ah well. :)

We note that the idea of the gay rights meme is likely precisely that - if you feel that you cannot ignore it and you address it, then you raise awareness. Raised awareness is a fantastic thing when trying to pull oneself up from a perceived or real second-class status.

There does need to be more awareness and talking. This may just not be the way to do it.
