There they are!

Now, I shall announce the purpose to which these were created, namely, see that post about five posts down? The artmeme one? These are my freearts for you guys! So if the five people who got the art slots, namely tieran, draggo, gungho, lightgreendryad, and reiver, would e-mail me their mailing addresses, I shall be stuffing these in the mail this week! (Well, I've got yours still, Draggo, unless it's changed. I'll stick your badge in with it while I'm at it.)

Also, if any of you guys have a real "must have" preference on these, feel free to call dibs. First come, first served, I'm afraid.

For everyone else, I really wish I could afford to just keep making these and giving them away to everybody, but sadly I really can't. This initial giveaway is happeninng because I did the meme not even knowing what the heck I'd come up with, and these are what I found. I'm very glad I did the meme, given that these are probably going to become a small but significant chunk of my income and otherwise I'd never have thought of them. Hey SPark, you have a lot more experience on LJ than I do; I'm asking your advice...

I just got friended by someone named silent_and_calm. No idea where he came from. No comment saying "hey, can I add you" no intro whatsoever... Do you have any experience with this? Does anyone else have any advice on what I should do?

Right now, I get a weird feeling from this guy. His posts are all impersonal, yet frequent. He is deliberately anonymous and unconnected, and yet he has a ton of people on his friend list. Is this a Lurker? I'd post this on my LJ, but then he'd see it.

Well, several options.

1. He's the bored, lj-surfing type. These guys friend people at random because they like something about what they're read, and want to read more. Sometimes they friend in hopes of getting an automatic friend-back, which some folks do, so that they can read additional, friends-only posts. They're weird, but harmless, they just want to read.

2. He's a troll. Certain types of trolls friend a lot of people, and just lie in wait, hoping you'll post something they can troll. However, this type usually has offensive and rude stuff in their own lj, so it's probably not.

3. He's a stalker. This is also fairly unlikely, as in that case he wouldn't have a huge group of friends, because he'd creep out people and nobody would friend him back.

In any of these cases, my advice is to ignore it. Unless your public lj posts contain information that could lead him to find you in person, which isn't very likely, even if he could, that he would, but it is something to be mindful of. If he really makes you uncomfortable, it's possible to ban him from your lj, but that just means he can't friend you or comment, he can still visit and view public posts. If it really bothers you, start posting everything friendlocked, and he won't be able to see anything at all unless you do friend him back. Myself, I post most of my stuff public, but a fair bit of it friendslocked when it has personal information, and some of it filtered further when it's very personal, or specific to an interest group.

Hrm. Further perusal of his lj suggests that he's just plain WEIRD and gets some kind of kick out of friending people at random, since he addresses the issue directly on his userinfo page. I'd suggest ignoring and friendlocking posts as an even better strategy now, as it's going to deprive him of what he wants, namely the horrified reaction.

My method right now is to lock anything any slightly personal behind a friend's lock. But if I don't add him as a friend, he can't read those, right?

Yep. You can read his friends-only stuff (as if he'd have any!) but he can't read yours unless you friend him back.
