So a few hours ago the internet suddenly stopped working. And at about the same time I heard a faint sound that I thought might be thunder. Except when we looked outside, there was definitely not a storm. That was odd, so JJ ventured out into the cold (27 degrees farenhight, ugh!) to see what was going on. And returned to report a tower of smoke and sparks.

I decided I could brave the chill, so I went out to have a look. Barely a block away from our house there was a HUGE fire, of the towering inferno sort. At first I thought it was just a car on fire, but then I got a better view and saw it was something else as well. And not only was it on fire, and burning very fiercely, but there were periodic explosions, including one really good fireball worthy of a Hollywood car explosion. Some cables that ran over the fire also started burning, (that being why the net went down, I think,) and a power pole on the other side of the street managed to catch on fire, adding occasional showers of blue sparks to the fun.

We stood at a VERY SAFE distance and watched it for a while. There were swarms of cop cars and fire trucks and an abulance and everything, though as far as we can tell nobody was hurt. We did see one fellow handcuffed and led off though. Somebody said he was a DUI.

From what I heard from the various neigbors all out in the street, though it may be wrong, somebody was driving drunk, and crashed his car into the side of an RV parked on the street, and he hit the propane tank, so the whole thing went up in a fireball. That was the "thunder" I heard, the initial explosion. Apparently the guy got safely out of his car, (safe enough to be arrested and taken off in a cop car, rather than taken off in the abulance. And being fueld by propane, the RV burned quite merrily, and set fire to the minivan parked next to it as well, which was what I first saw burning. It was a really impressive fire, I've never seen anything like it. JJ took a lot of photos, and a little bit if video, which hopefully should turn out.

The most shocking thing, however, is that it's been less than two hours since the fire was put out, and the internet is already back!

We plan on getting the paper tomorrow and seeing if we can find out any more about it.

Idly, JJ may want to look at selling photos to the local press, if there were no obvious reporters on the scene...

Holy crap. I heard the sirens, and I remember hearing an odd rumbling, but it was rather faint. That's what it was? Wow. Is it on 18th? I'm wondering if I'll see it as I go by on the bus today...

It's just off 18th, on a side street whose name I can't remember, but it's the one right before Chambers. You can see it as you go by on 18th though.

That sounds like something to gawk at, yes. Luckily, it sounds like there were plenty of trained people there, so that nobody had to worry about a crowd standing around while someone needed help.

I await the pictures to see how big a boom we're talking about.

oye! As a part time RVer, that story is quite frightening to me.

Heh. Well, apparently RVs are prone to this sort of thing. I was trying to see if there were any news stories about it on line, and googling "RV fire" gets you all kinds of scary results.
