Ha! I am not alone!

I was just linked to what somebody called The Eric Burns School of Blogging. The article there is about wecomic critics, and is pretty spot on, but scroll down to "Don't try to rewrite history" and you'll find a very excellent explanation of why, with a very few exceptions, I refuse to take down posts, delete comments, or make major edits save as footnotes. And why people who do those things, especially the ones who delete comments, get a black mark in my book. I'm not going to regard you as a total idiot just because of doing it, I understand the reasons behind doing it, and I've done it myself a time or two, but it's something I consider a pretty big indicator of potential idiocy, especially if you do it a lot.

I do that sometimes when the comment I'm making is meant to be a private comment and I don't intend it as something for everyone to read... I'm a rather private person, and I don't like to give out my icq address and such, so sending someone an IM isn't a usual thing for me. I think of it as like having a private conversation with someone at a party, where a stranger may overhear it, but they aren't really invited to be a part of said coversation. Perhaps this is not proper netiquette, but that's just how I am. The comment will get to the person it was meant for, since it is likely to show up in their email, and if they wish to discuss it further with me privately, they're always welcome to.

Of course I would have to have an extremely good reason to remove something that I intended to be public, or addressed to all of my friends. Doing that without really good cause is just plain rude.

*chuckles* Indeed. There is a difference between posting and deleting immediately for privacy's sake, and posting and then taking it down when you looked stupid.
