Although... what's with the red scales? Are they representative of the Yin scales on a Chinese dragon, or something else?

Guardian is colored symbolically. Purple for me, and for royalty. Gold for power, and for dragons. Red for fire, and for the heart's blood.

As for why the red ended up being random scales here and there, well... ask the artist who originally designed Guardian, I guess. I told her those three colors needed to be there, but the choice of how to put them where to was up to her. I quite approve of the effect though.

It looks like a take on koi scales to me. You get koi with randomly different-colored scales in ones or small patches.
