"After all, they were not evil things of their kind. They were the men of another age and another order of being. Nature had played a hellish jest on them--as it will on any others that human madness, callousness, or cruelty may hereafter dig up in that hideously dead or sleeping polar waste--and this was their tragic homecoming. They had not been even savages--for what indeed had they done? That awful awakening in the cold of an unknown epoch--perhaps an attack by the furry, frantically barking quadrupeds, and a dazed defense against them and the equally frantic white simians with the queer wrappings and paraphernalia . . poor Lake, poor Gedney . . . and poor Old Ones! Scientists to the last--what had they done that we would not have done in their place? God, what intelligence and persistence! What a facing of the incredible, just as those kinsmen and forbears had faced things only a little less incredible! Radiates, vegetables, monstrosities, star spawn--whatever they had been, they were men!"

-H. P. Lovecraft.
At The Mountains Of Madness

If you're asking "What is this?" You probably haven't read At The Mountains of Madness, and aren't really familiar with the Cthulhu Mythos universe. These are some things from said story, and said universe. On the left we have an Elder Thing, sometimes called an Old One, with some energy weapons, which are cannon in concept, if not in appearance. On the right is its nemesis, a dreadful Shoggoth. The poor Elder Thing is probably doomed.

Dang this was fun to draw. You never see action shots of Elder Things, it's always the textbook illustration sort of drawing. (If you see any at all, everybody does Cthulhu, but not nearly as many do Elder Things.) I really loved doing one in a dynamic pose. Though posing a radially symmetrical barrel with a starfish head and tentacle feet was interesting, let me tell you.

The shoggoth is looooooooooooking at you!

Hee, that looks neat :D You've managed to get in a good sense of motion, and reproduced all the salient features of both. The ray guns are fun (for some reason, my imagination always had them as more two handed... I mean tentacled...

Great drawing, I have to give it 5 out of 5 ;D

Hey Steph. It's Crystal. We're in town - wondering what you two are up to Monday night - wanna go to dinner? Call us! 831-747-7325 for me. Also, the Friday night thing is at Alex's parents' house at 6:30. Hope to hear from you soon!

(We tried calling JJ's phone, but no one picked up and the voice mailbox was full. That's kind of pointless...*prods JJ*)

Hey there. JJ is weird, he won't pick up calls from numbers he doesn't recognize. :P He says he'll call in tomorrow, it's 9:30 right now and we're not sure if now is a good time to call, since you guys are morning people. We should be free for dinner though, we don't really have any plans.
