I don't intend to do many player character sprites, mostly I prefer the monsters. But Magus is a boss monster too, so I guess he counts. :D And also totally my favorite Chrono Trigger character.

Very nice. I tried to get some shots of his cast animation yesterday, but I only had about five minutes and the first fight I ran into he was facing away from the screen. >.

If I knew how to rip movies off of youtube and then take them apart into frames... is that possible? There's a youtube movie of the party battling him when you encounter him as a boss, and it's got the black magic cast in it, but it goes by too fast, and I can't frame-by-frame in youtube.

YouTube probably doesn't have enough resolution for you to get the pixels down accurately anyway, and I know it doesn't have the framerate (YouTube maxes out around 30fps; SNES is around 60). If you did have a video of sufficient quality, though, most players can slow down playback enough for you to get frame-by-frame images.
