Don't you love it when people seem to need to redefine words? Like that "Isn't it Ironic" song with virtually no irony in it anywhere? Well, somebody who seems to be thinking of bidding on my custom suit auction has his own definition of arrogance. That's the only explanation I can come up with to explain this little exchange.

Him: "I need a custom bear suit (mascotstyle, not realistic). I am 6'4 tall and I freely admit that I cannot draw. If I give you my sizes, can you design it and give me a quote for it?

thanks in advance,
Brian
"

Me: "It's definitely possible for me to do so!

Do note, however, that this auction IS around my usual price range,as far as the reserve and buy now price, so don't expect to get a cheaper deal by getting a quote this way rather than just bidding, since such a designed and custom built suit is exactly what the auction is for.
"

Him: "I didn't ask if I can get it cheaper. I undestand that the time an effort of quality costume is a premium.

Your relpy is entirly arrogant... good luck with your attitude in the future.
"

Me: ??????????!

I then responded: "My apologies if I appeared arrogant. I can't figure out exactly what is arrogant there. I stated that my prices are in the same range as the price of this auction. This is a statement of fact. And as it is 100% against ebay's terms andpolicies to conclude a deal outside of their auction system, there's nothing else I could say in response to your question.

If you're intersted bid, if you're not, don't, and if you can't deal with my supposed arrogance, I suppose you'll have to look elsewhere.
"

*chuckles* Good thing I'm not all that desperate for business. But dang! That was just... totally out of the blue. Arrogant? Because I wanted to make sure he knew that he wasn't going to get a cheaper suit? WTF?

(P.S. Oh e-bay guru, DOES that sound like an attempt to conclude a deal outside of e-bay? Because this actually has me in the mood to smack this guy down a bit more, and if you think it is, well... I can most certainly report it as such.)

That wasn't arrogant. I mean, if he is asking questions about something you are already selling we must assume he wants a vairable that is not present on the currently advertised good. Since he describes something that already fits those variables, it is reasonable to assume that cost is what he is questioning.

If he doesn't want to change any variable, why doesn't he just bid on the e-bay item?

And yes, lacking a variable not available on the ebay advertised item, it sounds very much like an attempt to conclude business outside of ebay

And the Official Verdict Is...

Can we say, "Trying to complete a transaction off eBay?"

Sure we can! *snickers*

While he is trying to complete a transaction off eBay, I think that primarily refers to transactions which preclude your completion of the eBay transaction. If you do sell him your services, it can easily be framed as a "I got your name from eBay but didn't want an auction." It doesn't mean you can't also complete your eBay auction.

You weren't being arrogant, but you were being a little impudent. It was not polite to assume that he wanted a lower price just because he asked for a quote. If I were 6'4" and required extra services, I probably would have done the same thing, because there very well could be a surcharge for extra material or design services.

I can see where it might be an arrogant tone, if you choose to read it that way - it's a "I'm fluffed on my own self-importance so much that I automatically assume you're trying to talk me down."

Since he asked for a quote, he was probably expecting you to say "Sure! I can give you a quote, and if you want that, bid on my auction!" That you pre-empted him by saying "Custom work is generally going to be about these prices, and those prices are pretty non-negotiable" probably came off as arrogant, but he had to be looking for it, really.
