I return victorious!
Oct. 3rd, 2006 02:21 pmThe expedition was a success. The initial trip down took around 40 minutes, though the return took somewhat over an hour, but I was strolling slowly on the way back, and limping a bit towards the end. Sadly I am in terrible shape, and though my hips actually took the trip better than I'd feared, my left knee decided it did not approve of all this activity.
I worry about that a bit. If my lower joints get too bad, I won't be able to walk distances carrying weight, and doing so is the only way I can manage to get real exercise. Exercise for its own sake is just not something I can do. I need a primary goal that has exercise as a side effect. I plan to start walking more places and having JJ drive me less. But if I can't walk... I don't know what I'll do. But hopefully this was merely a complaint brought on by lack of muscle strength around the area, and will thus clear up as I walk more.

Date: 2006-10-03 10:07 pm (UTC)That said, A. and I walk as regularly as we can, just taking in the usual routes, the scenery, sunsets, cats (it's like our own giant free-range pet store out there). I actually enjoy it now, the more I do it. I suffer from chronic pain (due to various injuries and arthritis), and it's only with regular outings (even just 15 mins a day) that the pain from walking goes away. I wouldn't fret about it just yet.
A few miles as your first big outing in awhile might have been just a bit too much. Don't forget to stretch too (maybe a little before the walk to work out kinks, but definitely after to ease your muscles). Any other activities like chores, gardenwork and stuff also counts, and it's far more fun to do activities than to just plain exercise.

Date: 2006-10-04 02:09 am (UTC)I may have that looked at if I were you if it persists. At least, be careful (it's easy to tell the difference between joint pain and muscle pain... muscle ache is usually a dull pain and joint pain is sharper and often throbbing.) Unexplained joint pain (unrelated to previous injury or excessive strain) is indicative of a number of more serious systemic issues.
What is your vitamin/mineral and protein intake like? -- one possible factor is a deficiency (I think.).
Muscle pain on the other hand is usually just because your muscles aren't used to it... walk some more and it'll recover quickly.
