OCD

I recently realized that I have a little snippet of OCD. Or rather, I should say I have a little bit of obsessive compulsive nature. It's not OCD unless it's a disorder, and of course to be a disorder it has to affect your quality of life in some significant way. Which this doesn't.

I just like to sort things. Particularly candy, although also books, fabrics, art supplies, and just about anything else, really. I always sorted my candy as a child. I'd get a bunch of candy that was in some way varied, like runts flavors, or jelly belly flavors, and I'd sort them out into little piles of the same flavor. Then I'd go through and make groupings, taking one of each kind. Then I'd eat all the ones there were left overs of first, because they were extra. And then I'd go through and eat the ones left in a specific order, ending with the last group of one of each kind, eating those in reverse order of how much I like them, so that the very best one was the last one I ate.

It's not a compulsion, exactly. I don't have to eat them this way, and if, for example, I'm given a handful of jelly bellies in public, I'll just eat them normally. But sorting them and eating them in the "correct" order is ridiculously satisfying.

Well, right now I have a whole bag of jelly bellies that need sorting, bye.

Haha! I totally know the feeling. My family jokingly refers to me as having OCD and occassionally I tell my friends such things. But like you said, it doesn't impair my life (like my anxiety does) its just little silly things I like to do.

Like when I was a little kid and went shopping with my mom she'd let me browse the toy section by myself because, unlike all the other kids throwing things around and demanding they own certain objects and running around like animals I would stand there silently and sort the toys. I seriously took the department employees job away, basically, 'cause I did all the zoning and organzing for him.

I also did the candy thing at Halloween. I had to sort the candy into piles and then I usually organized it in some design- usually a flower and took a picture. Hehehe.

Jelly bellies are awesome! Though I can never resist getting the 39 flavor mix, which has a couple of flavors in it I don't actually like.

I have a weird thing like that with numbers.
I don't like odd numbers.

Even numbers feel right. So if I'm eating candy, like Skittles or Mini Eggs, I eat two at a time. Or, if I eat one at a time, it has to end on an even number.
And it's not just candy. I do it with many things. ^^; Like the volume, if it's in numbers, has to be on an even number.

Another really strange thing I have is that when I'm playing Solitaire, the Aces must be put in a certain order. Spades, Hearts, Clubs then Diamonds.

^^;;; I'm sure I could come up with a ton more examples to show just how weird I really am. ^^;;

I think a Jelly Belly-related case of OCD could hardly EVER be an impedance to one's life... just make your life involve a job at the factory! ;D You could replace the machines that sort them by flavour in the trays! But no eating the merchandise. ;D

obsessive compulsive dragon?
actually it sounds like a good trait for the species, gotta keep that horde tidy.

All kidding aside everyone has something their a little obsessive over, mine i guess is hand tightening every screw on a computers case and dusted out with the compressor before letting it leave my workbench.

Lawl. Yesterday I bought a bag of jelly belly - a 45 flavor bag.

I find the problem with the assorted bags is that unless I know what flavor I'm eating, or it's a really obvious flavor like popcorn or pear, they all just taste like sugar to me... kinda ruins the point of having individual flavors.

... Now I have a sudden desire to go sort *my* jellybeans...

Sometimes it just feels best to be doing things in an orderly fashion, or at least to have a clear plan, knowing exactly what you're getting into, et cetera... yes, I think you're not alone. *hides the pretzel sticks that she likes to bite in half and then bite those halves in half again*

A lot of people seem to do a similar thing with their candy, -myself included. Maybe it's that we don't only want our mouths to enjoy it, but our brains to some extent too. Candy shouldn't just taste good, it has to be fun. It doesn't sound as much like OCD to me as just.. playing with our food. XD

o.O; Leave it to the Internet to take little things you consider 'individual oddities' and show you you may not be all that different after all. :7

Next time someone looks at me funny for doing that exact same thing with the grouping, eating the "stragglers" first, then going least-to-most favorite in each group... I'll know I'm not the only one who does that. ^.^
