My guardian dragon came in the mail today.

In pieces.

Just three pices, but I can't find one of them, and the other has screwed up the armature when it broke loose, so I'm not sure it's even possible to repair.

I guess you get what you pay for after all. That was incredibly cheap for how pretty it was, but the inexperience that didn't show up in the sculpting showed up in the packaging.

It was packed in shredded paper, which is one of the WORST packing materials for truly delicate objects. Shredded paper is fine for something fairly robust that you just don't want to have actively rattling loose, but if you're shipping something that is really, honestly breakable, NEVER ship in shredded paper. (And always double box, and never ship two items inside the same inner box, but she did those things, they just weren't enough to make up for the shredded paper.)

I was so excited to get it, and now I'm just depressed.

Augh... fuck. ;_;
I'm sorry to hear it. I strongly reccommend telling the original artist what happened. She might not be able to do anything about it now, but she'll know for future sculptures, at least.

Yeah, I've let her know. Haven't gotten a response yet.

Actually, shredded paper CAN work, but you need to put a LOT in there, because of how easily it compresses.

And the best field-test for proper packing is if you can drop it a distance of ~5 feet onto hard concrete. Regardless of what shipping method you use, it'll go through that equivalent of handling.

If it's really fragile, the force of stuffing enough paper in will break it. This box was completely, completely, completely filled with paper. It wasn't loose, but no matter how you much put in, there's always room for it to compress more, and on something this delicate even moving a few millimeters is enough to break it.

Aah, I wasn't aware of how delicate you were talking.

Personally, the worst part of my day is when I get a package and it goes *tinkle tinkle tinkle* when you move it. I have no idea what's inside, but I just feel so sorry for the recipient. Is it just a broken mirror? Is it the glass of a picture? Is it a one-of-a-kind custom stained-glass creation? >:

Well, this didn't rattle. But this thing (http://bladespark.topcities.com/guardian_el.jpg) is pretty much made up of "delicate". Particularly the tail.

Agh.. I actually winced when I read that. Definitely tell the seller.. if only so they can also feel bad about their shitty job :/

Yeah, I've let her know.

That is absolutely terrible. Having to go through customs certainly doesn't help the packing job, either.

OH NO!!! It was sooo pretty. That makes my tummy hurt just hearing that. Was it insured, at least?

Insurance means nothing if the postal service didn't damage it. Because the box is intact, they won't give any money for it, because they didn't cause the damage, it was inadequately packed.

That's why I never bother to get it, it's worthless except in those cases where they've like... dropped the truck on the box, or something, and it's flattened.

Shredded paper? I'm not even sure how I'd ship something like that (so many breakable bits!), but it'd involve a lot more packaging...

I hope you can find the missing bit and at least fix it up some D:.

aww, I'm so sorry hon, That does look very delicate, and beautiful, I sure hope you can either get somthing worked out with the original artist, or try to repair it :( .. *hugs*

Well, at least I got something else in the mail yesterday that wasn't broken. *grins* It was cute!

And there is something in the mail for you just now, by the way. Careful when you unpack it, there's a fragile bit at the center of the package.

aww, glad it got there okay, :) I always worry when sending things in the mail, glad it got to you safe and sound :)

hehe as you could tell I'm a bit of a novice at shipping things too, hehe at least I found another use for all my scrap fleece bits I have piling up..

That really puzzled me for a minute. I was all "why is somebody sending me scrap fleece?"

Sorry for the confusion :)
